The Day He Poked Out My Self-Actualized Third Eye
For so long I thought humanistic “states” of consciousness were the only way to truth. I found so much hope in philosophical and psychological systems that promoted the self-value and ability of the common man.
“Existence precedes and rules essence.“
Jean-Paul Sartre
I attempted to learn my way to truth, and I found the fight to be of no avail. The struggle left me stronger, because when I realized I had truly found something that had real truth and substance I am sure now not to let it go.
To Self-Actualize
Maslow’s Self-Actualizing state of existence seemed the state to which I aspired the most. The system seemed simple enough: get past the physiological, emotional, and other needs to rid myself of all in a state of self-actualization.
“Self Actualization is the intrinsic growth of what is already in the organism, or more accurately, of what the organism is.“
Abraham Maslow
Maslow even taught in his basic principles that man is basically good and not evil. It amazed me that this system was thought of even in a light in which all men could achieve. The “peak experience” was even the highest state of a self-actualized consciousness:
“Feelings of limitless horizons opening up to the vision, the feeling of being simultaneously more powerful and also more helpless than one ever was before, the feeling of ecstasy and wonder and awe, the loss of placement in time and space with, finally, the conviction that something extremely important and valuable had happened, so that the subject was to some extent transformed and strengthened even in his daily life by such experiences.“
Abraham Maslow
The focus is squarely on the Self (always capital “S”) and the nature and responsibility of the man. And yet, even if the man does not achieve the state of self-actualization, no harm is done, it only serves as a satisfier (as opposed to a dis-satisfier). It should also be noted that if you look in most motivational or psychological books you will not find the true highest state of the hierarchy of needs which was in fact called “self-transcendence,” because Maslow put religious leaders in that category; and we can’t put anything in there that all can’t achieve. But of course my joy ride through humanism did not end at Maslow; I continued to find more interest in the eastern philosophies.
Where Is My Third Eye?
Buddhism is truly a benchmark in philosophical systems that appeal to the intellect. The word “enlightenment” still gives me chills. To find the concept of the “Third Eye” caused me to be all the more curious and excited. In a few eastern ideologies(and now the New Age movement as well) a Chakra becomes an important part of the ideology.
The Third Eye (also called the “Mind’s Eye,” or “Third Eye Center”) is one of the seven Chakras. The Third Eye (sometimes given the subtitle: “Christ Consciousness Center”) is the sixth and is associate with intuition and Extra-sensory perception (ESP).
The Third Eye is also necessary if you are to see through the lower four dimensions (the first three being the physical world and the fourth being the emotional/astral plane), because everything is subject to distortion in these planes without a functioning Third Eye (be sure to replace your batteries monthly). Also, with the Third Eye you can enter the fifth or spiritual dimension; wow, this is exciting stuff. I had no idea I needed three eyes to access the fifth dimension, on the third planet from the sun, during the twenty-second year of my life! Finally, I found this description of the Third Eye which I believe sums up the ideology the best:
“The third eye is the center of psychic powers and higher intuition, you can receive guidance, channeling, and tune into your higher self. This is the center that enables you to experience telepathy, astral travel and past lives.”
So, now that I have the instruction manual on how to get my self-actualized Third Eye—what am I suppose to do? Poke it out.
Poking Out The Self-Actualized Third Eye
After spending way to much time frolicking about in these worthless philosophical systems, I was then shown that I couldn’t even think about a Third Eye; because my first two were still closed.
“For My people are foolish,
They know Me not;
They are stupid children
And have no understanding
They are shrewd to do evil,
But to do good they do not know.“
Jeremiah 4:22
When I look back on all these ideologies it’s not coincidence that all of them made some provision for Jesus somewhere in their scheme. They knew they couldn’t deny His impact, so they had to find a way to “fit” Him into their pre-conceived systems. (He is most often labeled as “one of the enlightened” or He existed in realms outside of our own.)
What a revelation it was to not see Jesus as only “one of the enlightened” alongside Buddha, Muhammad, and the like; but to be shown that He is the author and perfecter of faith, and in fact, all is made through Him (Hebrews 12:2, Ephesians 2:10). It is still odd to think how I persecuted Christians and henceforth the living God Himself.
“Chris, Chris, why are you persecuting Me? […] it will be told you what you must do.” (cf. Acts 9:1–9)
This month is a year from my conversion, and I am in awe of what has changed in my life. I’m so thankful He stopped me before I wasted any more time. Well, at least the Self-Actualized Third Eye makes a good fairy tale.
“Dreaming of that face again”?
Don’t worry, I’m a Pre-Med student, I can bandage up your eye! Phew, that could have been dangerous!
Thanks for the reference John. This article is about the culmination of the search of that very dream. It’s good that stuff like this no longer moves me:
