Happy Columbus Day!
Well another year, another Columbus Day. As I realized that this day has to mean more than just another day off for me right (thank you Jesus for government employment)? Surely this man of the same first name as I accomplished great things right? Why else would we celebrate a day in his honor? Let’s take a look at the resume of Christopher Columbus.
We celebrate a day in his honor as he is the one who “discovered” the Americas. The worst part is that he also decided to do all this in the name of Jesus.
Your Highnesses, as Catholic Christians and Princes who love the holy Christian faith, and the propagation of it, and who are enemies of the sect of Mahoma and to all idolatries and heresies, resolved to send me, Cristobol Colon, to the said parts of India to see the said princes, and the cities and lands, and their disposition, with a view that they might be converted to our holy faith; and ordered that I should not go by land to the eastward, as had been customary, but that I should go by way of the west, wither up to this day, we do not know for certain that any one has gone.
Christopher Columbus, Journal of His First Voyage
His record of murder, enslavement (sending back over 500 natives after his second voyage), bringing disease to the natives, and using them for all their material wealth has led "The National Council of Churches declares the anniversary of Columbus 'not a time for celebration' but for 'reflection and repentance' in which whites must acknowledge a continuing history of 'oppression, degradation, and genocide.'"
Despite the fact that there is evidence of pre-Columbus trans-atlantic contact, and the fact that he never “discovered” our very country that celebrates the holiday—it makes you wonder why do we celebrate this man? Can I get a “woot, woot” for the real natives?
I will continue to be amazed at what our country celebrates as “heroic.” It seems like a day when people are actually concerned with truth and admirable causes that the cause of social injustice will continue to be celebrated by Americans happily and naively. Put Jesus in a manager, make the resurrection about a bunny, celebrate a murder and rapist, have a holiday about occult practices, and don’t forget that always cheerful flag day!
“Put Jesus in a manager,“
What does that mean
“make the resurrection about a bunny,“
We celebrate Resurrection Day a week after passover to spite the Jews, did you know that?
I still haven’t met any
“celebrate a murder and rapist,“
John Calvin advocated the murder of heretics, and he advanced reformed theology
“have a holiday about occult practices,“
Like Christmas, Easter, Halloween?
“and donâ??t forget that always cheerful flag day!“
What does this mean, America is murderous, let the blood of those our ancestors killed be a day of guilt. Actually, let everyday be a day of guilt. We shall call it National Guilt Day for Humans, since humans exist, and all bad things are ultimately caused by humans.
I hate being human, it’s like so egocentric! When will we divorce ourselves of celebrating anything human?
–manager — Xmas
–You’re going to have to back up that second assertion
–You committed the genetic fallacy in your third point.
–Yes.
–I was being sarcastic.
“You committed the genetic fallacy in your third point.“
I was being sarcastic
“Can I get a â??woot, wootâ? for the real natives?“
Okay, “woot, woot” for Adam and Eve. They were natives of planet earth, Adam literally was.
“celebrate a murder and rapist“
Which rapist do Americans celebrate?
You can thank the Italians for Columbus Day, they started it.

Whoa…reading these comments was fun! Okay, reading this made me freak out…Jesus was born in a manger, right? Has it been that long since I’ve read about his birth? Ah, I just biblegateway.com’d it and yes, there was a manger. Good, I’m not crazy. Second, am I missing something? What genetic fallacy? And is there a Calvin Day where I get off school that I don’t know about?
Last, and more seriously, I get that Halloween has some occult practices, but do Christmas and Easter? I mean, I know both those holidays have pagan elements, but pagan doesn’t always equal occult, does it?
And, do you think, as Christians, that it’s okay to go to costume parties or let your children trick or treat around Halloween time? I was allowed to trick or treat as a kid, as long as my costume wasn’t evil, so I’ve always wondered about this.
And Easter, I know that bunnies were probably attached to Easter through the pagan stuff, but does that mean Christians shouldn’t eat chocolate bunnies or let their kid sit on the Easter bunnies lap in the mall?
Bottom line question: Is it okay for Christians to participate in the holidays as they are, knowing some elements came from pagan stuff, or should we strip down Easter/Christmas to only the Christian elements and throw away Halloween altogether?
