TDY To Reno

I’m blogging from my first TDY for work. TDY is military parlance for a business trip; it stands for “Temporary Duty Yonder.” I came to the incredibly interesting and exciting Reno, Nevada (ok, not really). I have a lot of down time, and it’s been hard to keep myself occupied. The conference is tbe 2006 Professional Airmen’s Conference & Annual Convention sponsored by the Air Force Sergeants Association. Basically, it’s for the top enlisted Air Force soldiers.

The only thing to do around here is (1) drink, (2) gamble, or (3) drink and gamble. It’s amazing to see people gambling at 8 in the morning! And of course the hotel I’m staying at will happily cater to all your gambling/drinking needs. I never thought I’d be going on “business trips” like my dad. As I was packing I realized that I was doing just that. While this has been an interesting experience, I know that I don’t want this to be a normal event. I’ve decided I’d be much happier staying in one general area tending to a family (ideally in a ministry setting). Traveling with friends/family is one thing, and traveling alone is quite another (big drag).

It’s been interesting to get feedback on the product that I work to maintain. I’ve met some neat people include the highest enlisted soldier in the Air Force Chief Master Sergeant Rod McKinley; he was a really nice guy (picture below with him and my boss Neil).
