The Lost Tomb of Jesus?

Pastor Haygood of Orange Hill Baptist Church in Austell, GA recently wrote an article concerning the recent “tomb of Jesus” discovery. The article is entitled: “The Lost Tomb of Jesus?: A Few Preliminary Reflections.” It is pertinent, concise, meek, and accurate. It gave me great confidence in our Risen Savior as all apologetics should.

“There are very few events of ancient history better attested with sound evidence than the bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ. It’s secure in its place in the annals of history, and its evidence is sufficiently impressive to demand an answer from every one in the world”

Please take a few moments to read the article. It will greatly benefit your faith.

  1. I’m very interested in the “sound evidence” he mentions, do you know of any?

  2. @Alex: You’re right that that statement is left a little unqualified. I haven’t the space to defend the resurrection here. I would suggest this article for your study.

  3. That was an interesting article. Thanks for posting it.

From the little I’ve seen of Christian reaction, it’s been pretty reasonable. (Of course, I don’t pay that much attention… this is just what I’ve seen.) When this Jesus Tomb story broke, it appeared to me to be a generally unscholarly “stunt” (as your article puts it) and I didn’t really see any Christians running around looking for cover. So, that’s good. But it does raise some extremely interesting questions, namely, what exactly is your faith based on? Can that basis even be wholly defined? I was thinking, after reading the article you posted, that my previous, very long post could seem like an argument for “subjectivistic
mysticism” (as the guy in your article says). I certainly did not mean that!! But, I did mean that our faith – from my perspective – is not based wholly on evidence. And it is not based wholly on faith. There’s some odd and unsearchable combination of the two that make up our faith. Anyway, that’s my take. I wanted to clarify that since I certainly do believe evidence is important… it’s just not the whole story.

Man, I tend to write in an extremely un-concise fashion sometimes… Sorry, it’s late. :-)

  4. @Amanda: You’re right that evidence is not the object of our faith as faith is longing for things unseen (Heb 11:1). If however some evidence contradicted the premises my faith was laid upon than it is worth a study (cf. last post).
